NEXTGEN

The "NextGen poets" are in the news, to the consternation of unrecognised geniuses everywhere! Admittedly, it's a slapdash assemblage, and obviously the result of some fierce horse trading among a very mixed crop of selectors (the judges included a radio announcer, the bass player from Radiohead, the poet laureate, and a "normal" who just happens to be a member of the Poetry Book Society) But I say good luck to them. I must be the only blogger on the internet to wish them well. Ron Silliman has called the Guardian selection "the worst collection of poetry [he] has ever read". More sanely, Todd Swift "a Canadian poet/critic/activist/screenwriter/editor/performance artist" (whew) has written an article for "Bookninja: The Next Generation Poets: Resistance is Futile". Another disgruntled tirade, but most of his points are well aimed. He notes, for example, that "several major contemporary poets are absurdly absent, such as Roddy Lumsden, Kate Clanchy and John Stammers" (to which I would add the underrated Greta Stoddart, A. B. Jackson, Julian Turner, Polly Clark, and Chris Greenhalgh) Swift concludes, "These twenty will travel the length and breadth of the land....while their peers, who form the majority, will be forced to stew their bitterness into grace and humility."

Not much of that bitterness has cooked down to anything resembling grace yet, however. Who in the name of God, for example, is "Adrian Slatcher"
? Surely this is a parody of Swiftian proportions. His priceless blog reads like the secret literary diary of Adrian Mole, a professional loser's catalogue of rejection slips and the ensuing tantrums: "I sent out a number of things in January" he typically opines, "But neither the Barcelona Review or the Reader were convinced. The responses were as gnomic as ever" I guess "No" passes for gnomic if you think about it long enough. Slatcher is, of course, a wry send-up of the disgruntled Poetry Failure. But who is he, really? Well, consider his grumpy response to the NextGen poets promotion. He moans about the inclusion of "Amanda Dalton" because "I was actually [sic] beaten by the latter for a poetry commission a few years ago. I'm not sure she's a poet so much as a voiced-dramatist or some such thing." Yes, it's particularly damaging to the reputation of British Poetry that Adrian was not selected as a NextGen poet.
He then attacks one of the few excellent poets on the list. "Paul Farley's" poem, he says, is "embarrassingly bad" and then he quotes some rather self evidently fine clever lines. "Am I missing something?" asks the Slatch [An ear? Wit? Irony?] Then it struck me. Slatcher IS Paul Farley, the cheeky devil, up to a little sly self promotion.

No, Slatcher's real enough. I've met him. He's just unbelieveable

Yes, I am real I'm afraid. My blog's just honest really. Honest about what I do like and what I don't. I thought the Paul Farley line was just crass in the extreme - I do try and like him, but I don't find a lot there, to be honest. But it might just be my taste doesn't really run to contemporary British poetry that much. I do hate it when I'm nasty about other writers/writing. I'm generally a fan. But these things are written in the moment, and what am I supposed to do, lie? I do get gnomic rejections, I'm afraid, and yes, they are just "no" by another word. Glad to have found Cuttlefish though. Nice to know someone else comments on stuff. Adrian Slatcher.

Wow. Slatcher points out a few home truths and Cuttlefish beams red. DANGER! DANGER! British poetry is on it knees and you know it - new voice is needed.

Shall I add a few words? Slatcher's blog is a bit of a cult read among many top British poets, poetry folks and publishers. He's even become a verb - 'I see Burnside has been slatchered again' etc. He'd be proud, but we're not lauging with him. His weepiness and passive aggression are the most hilarious, crowned only by his seeming total inability to see how achingly bad -not different, not unfashionable, not misunderstood - just poor, his writing is, especially his hilarious, so-bad-they-be-good short fictions.

He brown-noses anyone until they reject him, and especially fellow Mancs who he might (cause creepy blokes - always blokes - like these are always cowards) bump into at the local lit bashes he so aspires to be invited to. It is laugh-a-minute stuff. One northwest writer visibly shivered when I mentioned his name. Apparently he resembles an 'alien entity'. We ought not be so cruel, but Slatch thrives on bile.

If he is in a room between 'poet' Prynne and 'poet' Lumsden, perhaps they might form a tag team, burst the door down and put him out of his misery.

Can we lighten up and lay off Mr Slatcher now? His own comment, above, in response to our sarcastic comments about his blog, is a model of restraint and grace. He's no Franz Wright. And whatever we may feel about his blog, it's no reflection on his poetry or creative prose (we're suspending judgement there because we haven't read it).

Here at Cuttlefish we are now convinced of Mr Slatcher's existence and are reasonably sure he is not Paul Farley. And incidentally, neither are we.

At 5 July 2004 at 16:48, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Couple of dodgy uses of 'we' here. First the one that seems to speak for all of us: shall 'we' lay off Mr Slatcher. Well, you can't have it both ways. A bitch site where you can call off the dogs? No.

Second, the all-too-familiar 'royal' blogging 'we' - masking the fact that these lit blogs are all the work of lone wolf weeds with axes to grind, misinformation to peddle and too much time on their hands.

At 5 July 2004 at 20:03, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All of the above is obviously true and I'm just sorry nobody I've bumped into has ever said anything directly critical to me at these literary bashes; where, I have a drink, buy a book, perhaps talk about literature a little. I wasn't aware it was a party to which I wasn't even invited. I pay for the magazines and poetry books I read; I've even started a little magazine, Lamport Court, which can be found around Manchester and in the Poetry Library. It takes time and effort and money - I only hope its not as bad as my own 'poetry' apparently is, since I'd hate some of the very promising poets published there to be damned by association. Esther Morgan, Michael Mackmin, Steven Blyth, Ra Page and Robert Potts have liked my writing at various times - which is certainly not a homogenous bunch. The points made in the comments above have been taken on board. But I really can do without all of this personal stuff, Adrian Slatcher.

For the anonymous commentator who attacked Adrian Slatcher in such a cruel and personal way, i say; you're wrong and you demean yourself posting such an abusive message anonymously (I don't consider this post abusive and don't feel Adrian needs to know who i am). Adrian is a kind, generous and decent guy and no one i know laughs at Adrian or thinks bad about him behind his back. In fact it is the opposite; we admire his warm-spirit and supportiveness. He says what he sees, what he feels. Just because he doesn't applaud the Emperor's New Clothes he becomes a target. Argue with him by all means (he is gracious and open in any debate) but please lay off the personal bile. Can't anyone show passion for something anymore? Is it all about a literary hierarchy that cannot be challenged (until someone on the inside says we should and everyone then agrees)? Why do you feel so desperate to hurt someone you don't even know? (Oh yes, i know, you must be a real happy dude).

Using someone's physical appearance as an insult ('alien entity') is the ultimate sign of an immature and weak mind. I mean, no surprise, you hardly came across as an intellectual in your little rant about someone you don't even know (which you couldn't even put your name to - nice, that takes guts). Grow up , you adolescent piece of shit. I know you're just a troll and i'm rising to the bait but if you find the way people look so fucking funny i hope your face gets burned off in a car accident and you can spend every day laughing in the mirror. I do hope we can all find out who you are, you fucking coward. Wait for the boomerang. Mark Gordon, Manchester.

The Fish has retracted, but the bigger cowards continue to hide. Slatcher is a man of spirit and voice, the rest of you blatherskiting ultracrepidarians can carry on - as you, indeed, will, cloak and dagger character assassinating a man whom you DO NOT know. I'm with Slatcher. Lee Rourke. London.

Me also thinks Slatcher has shown some of you self-obsessed "poets" for what you really are. I for one applaud that. Go now and write your pap and bile, your hackneyed verse, your watered down meaningless thoughts, your folly, your mouth-wateringly, spineless, aping, topsy-turvy vacuous and, dare I say it, blatantly bad poetry. To the devil with you cretins. You ALL know who you are. Lee Rourke. London.

Now that's odd: not a peep on this NextGen post for weeks, then, since yesterday, a torrent of comments - ELEVEN, including two civilised statements by Mr. Slatcher himself. What's going to happen when Marjorie Perloff finds us?!

We stand by our opinion of "My Brilliant Career". However "supportive" and talented the real Adrian Slatcher may be, his blog persona does invite parody - a losing combination of [a] incomprehension at other's "success" and [b] complaint about rejection. In short, he sets himself up. Even the ironic title backfires. On the other hand, he's often articulate, politically engaged, and very very industrious. We wish him luck in his creative endeavours and urge him to lay off "slatchering" other writers in future. Think empathy here.

We note in some of the comments to this post a certain, shall we say, indelicacy - a subtle stylistic infelicity which we we'd rather not encounter on our site. See this? Even anonymity has its responsibilities.
Cuttlefish agree with the previous comment concerning ad hominem abuse. Personally, we're devastated when people stare at our tentacles.
Another commentator claims we can't "call off the dogs". But, of course, we can. One click and all these comments disappear. But we'll give it another 24 hours and watch with horrified fascination.

Brawl? There's no ethical mirage here. It goes like this: Slatcher has for many months been bad-mouthing and personally abusing poets and noveslists on his sad wankathon. He has made unpleasant, envious comments about several personal friends of mine. He dismissed Heaney as a 'cunt' (due to his off-the-cuff support for Eminem, goaded from him by a hack).

Slatcher is one of a growing band of bitter losers whose consolation is to start a lit blog or bitch site where they dole out ill-informed opinions, badly written reviews and personal slaggings. The likes of tragic bit-part poet Silliman, octogenarian wannabe Martin Blyth, panto dame goth Alison Croggon (a rarity, us girls are generally above such chugging) and countless preppy Yank boys are dragging poetry down. Let's raise a Pimm's to the days when awful poets wept into their Corn Flakes and that was that.

Slatch deserves all he gets, including - long overdue - some of his own medicine. He does have one talent however - inventing supporters to cover his clammy back.

And is 'Cuttlefish' any different? Chummy enough and line-toeing now, but the cracks in his tentacles are showing.

How do you know we are real? How do you know you are real? For example, you might be Mr Slatcher's evil feminine side. Whoever you are, you seem to spend an unhealthy amount of time reading internet blogs like ours, and Slatcher's, and all the other saddos you mention. Tell me, we don't get the "chummy, line-toeing, cracks-in-tentacles" thing. If we knew what you were talking about we might plead guilty. Can you elaborate? Isn't leaving anonymous comments on other people's blogs even sadder than having your own?
And please please hurry because we're turning these comments off tomorrow! If you're interesting enough we'll save your comment and quote it in a post.
Thanks

Hello. Prompt how to get acquainted with the girl it to me to like. But does not know about it
I have read through one history
Each of you has your personal story; it is your history. Keeping a diary or writing your feelings in a special notebook is a wonderful way to learn how to think and write about who you are -- to develop your own identity and voice.

People of all ages are able to do this. Your own history is special because of your circumstances: your cultural, racial, religious or ethnic background. Your story is also part of human history, a part of the story of the dignity and worth of all human beings. By putting opinions and thoughts into words, you, too, can give voice to your inner self and strivings.

A long entry by Anne Frank on April 5, 1944, written after more than a year and a half of hiding from the Nazis, describes the range of emotions 14-year-old Anne is experiencing:

". . . but the moment I was alone I knew I was going to cry my eyes out. I slid to the floor in my nightgown and began by saying my prayers, very fervently. Then I drew my knees to my chest, lay my head on my arms and cried, all huddled up on the bare floor. A loud sob brought me back down to earth, and I choked back my tears, since I didn't want anyone next door to hear me . . .

"And now it's really over. I finally realized that I must do my school work to keep from being ignorant, to get on in life, to become a journalist, because that's what I want! I know I can write. A few of my stories are good, my descriptions of the Secret Annex are humorous, much of my diary is vivid and alive, but . . . it remains to be seen whether I really have talent . . .

"When I write I can shake off all my cares. My sorrow disappears, my spirits are revived! But, and that's a big question, will I ever be able to write something great, will I ever become a journalist or a writer? I hope so, oh, I hope so very much, because writing allows me to record everything, all my thoughts, ideals and fantasies.

"I haven't worked on Cady's Life for ages. In my mind I've worked out exactly what happens next, but the story doesn't seem to be coming along very well. I might never finish it, and it'll wind up in the wastepaper basket or the stove. That's a horrible thought, but then I say to myself, "At the age of 14 and with so little experience, you can't write about philosophy.' So onward and upward, with renewed spirits. It'll all work out, because I'm determined to write! Yours, Anne M. Frank

For those of you interested in reading some of Anne Frank's first stories and essays, including a version of Cady's Life, see Tales From the Secret Annex (Doubleday, 1996). Next: Reviewing and revising your writing
